Plant Root Images
Phenotype Screening Corporation has grown and imaged several plant varieties. The images shown below represent the current state of our development. These images were captured using our digital x-ray radiographic system and then combined into photomontage images that provide a view of actual plant root growth and subsurface arrangement. Some images are in stereo. The use of anaglyphic (red, cyan) glasses is required to experience the depth of field of the stereo images.
Plant images are shown in reduced resolution format. Full resolution images can be as large as 250 MB in PNG format for the 200 x 1000 mm sized containers. Full resolution versions of these and other plant root images are available from Phenotype Screening Corporation. Please contact us, providing a name, mailing address, specific interest, and qualifying information. We will be glad to mail out a DVD with images and a pair of anaglyphic glasses.
Maize
Maize in 200 x 500 mm container (reduced resolution). Left Plant is BS2907-01 at day 57, center plant is BS2911-01 at day 40 and right plant is CRW3(C6) at day 53
Soybean
Hutchison Stonewall soybean in 200 x 1000 mm container at day 74 (reduced resolution).
Left image is plant in substrate. Right image is washed root system.
Rice
Koshihikari rice at day 71 in 200 x 500 mm containers (reduced resolution).
Pepper
Keystone Resistant Giant No. 3 Sweet Pepper. Left is x-ray image of plant in substrate at day 76; right is photograph of root system removed from growth substrate on day 76 and stained. Note that because x-ray imaging is a transmission technology and photography is a reflected light imaging technology, the photograph appears to have a large opaque root system with more roots than the x-ray image.
Rape
Dwarf Essex rape in 200 x 500 mm containers at day 67 (reduced resolution).
Citrus
Seedlings at day 84 in 100 x 300 mm (reduced resolution). Left image is Citrus Research and Education Center Carrizo variety. Right Image is Citrus Research and Education Center Swingle variety.
Other Images
Corn Kernels
Dried corn kernels were imaged using the RootViz x-ray system. X-ray image is on the left in each pair. Image on the right in each pair is enhanced using image analysis software.
For one seed, gray scale enhancement is used to bring out various features of kernel.
Cotton Boll
The below animated image of a cotton boll illustrates how the various details of an object may be displayed. This animation is in stereo and anaglyphic glasses are required to see the stereo effect
